Oil & Gas Filtration Applications

Adsorbent dehydration is a high-efficiency water vapor removal process used in critical applications such as natural gas cryogenic plants.  Water vapor can create hydrates wreaking havoc on systems and damaging components. Properly conditioning the feed gas with high-efficiency removal of solids and liquids down to aerosol levels is required to keep adsorbent materials free of contaminants that degrade its ability to trap water. Poor filtration can lead to high regeneration cycles and premature adsorbent changeouts.

Jonell Systems recommends a Gas Coalescer effective at removal solids and low surface tension aerosols 0.3 microns and greater. To capture any exiting mole sieve fines or dust, a dry gas filter is recommended downstream of the contactor.

We have a wide range of filter cartridges ideally suited to fit the gas coalesce and the dry gas filter. These include: TRI-SHiELD, Twist-LOK, and Micro-LOK for the coalescers with the Gas-Pleat suited for the dry gas filter.  

Amine sweetening is an application that has several filtration processes. Pre-filtration of the natural gas stream to remove solids, aerosols, and liquids from Natural Gas before entering the contact tower is one. In addition to that excessive hydrocarbons need to be removed from the amine typically using carbon beds and solid particulates also need to be removed from the amine.

Removing solids from the amine stream can cause foaming and foaming in the contact tower reduces the removal rates of sour gas (H2S & CO2) which make gas sweetening challenging.

Jonell Systems recommends a Gas Coalescer upstream and downstream of the contact tower for natural gas filtration and a liquid vessel for amine is typically used in addition to the carbon bed and a particulate filter for solids removal.

Compressors are the heart of natural gas movement. Proper protection requires removal of solids and liquids that can cause harmful wear and damage to compressor valves, pistons, and bearings. These damages can lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars in repair cost and lost operations.

Jonell systems recommendation is that slugs or bulk removal of liquids be done using Scrubbers or Separators. If no slugs are expected then proper conditioning of the gas upstream of the compressor should be carried out using a minimum of a filter separator capable of high efficiency 1 micron removal of solids and liquids. For maximum protection of this critical equipment, and lowest Total Cost of Ownership, Jonell Systems recommends the use of horizontal multistage gas coalescer such as the SentinelTL

Natural gas liquids (NGLs) are produced in “wet” natural gas formations across the world. Condensate stabilization is the process in which heavier hydrocarbons typically C5+ is “stabilized” in a tower by heating the condensate to drive off the light constituents, C1-C4, so that the condensates Reid Vapor pressure is reduced enough for safe transportation or within required customer specifications. Common problems with poor filtration include high water load to the tower, fouling of tower trays, and heater bundles which leads to poor separation of the light ends. 

Jonell Systems recommends the JHFO, high-flow and high dirt, particulate filter followed by a Liquid/Liquid Coalescer to provide maximum uptime for your stabilizer.

Fuel gas cleanliness is an important factor in the consistent operations of compressors, turbines, and Low NOx burners. Poor removal of solids and liquids can lead to poor combustion, high fuel usage, as well as costly high VOC emissions, especially in today’s Lean Burn engines. High-efficiency Low NOx burner tips are also susceptible to fouling and coking when liquids or solids are present.   

To reduce costs associated with poor fuel gas Jonell Systems recommends a high-efficiency multi stage gas coalescer to effectively clean the fuel gas.

Low NoX Burner Applications

A widely used process in the natural gas production and midstream operations used to remove water is Glycol Dehydration. Removal of water reduces the risk of hydrate formation and decreases corrosion in process equipment and piping. Many pipeline specifications require between 4-7 lbs H2O/MMSCFD (check your local guidelines) in order to be transported along the pipeline. Poor removal of solids and liquids generally leads to plug tower trays, poor tower efficiency, and frequent foaming occurrences. These all lead to higher operating costs and lower production. Poor removal of contaminants in the feed gas leads to high ingression into the glycol regeneration loop resulting in black or dark-colored glycol which is a leading indicator of process performance. Common signs are increasing need of higher temps in reboiler due to coking on burners or low efficiency in heat exchanger due to fouled tubes.

Jonell Systems recommends a high efficiency 0.3 microns multistage Gas Coalescers, such as the SentinelTL for high loading applications, or a standard vertical 0.3-micron gas coalescer upstream of the contact tower. In the regeneration loop, Jonell Systems recommends carbon absorber along with absolute rated particulate filters upstream and downstream of the carbon bed.

Filtration in Fractionation involves separating solids from Y Grade liquids and filtering amine from hydrocarbons. Traditionally, customers are challenged with the high capital expense and maintenance expense of large contact towers as well as change out costs. Hydrocarbon carry over from contact towers also leads to a lost product which means lost profitability.

Jonell Systems has a unique compact Horizontal liquid/liquid coalescer solution for amine sweetening which has a much lower total cost of ownership compared to the large contact towers.

Our PhasePUR filter cartridges are best suited for this application.

  • Compressor Outlet Gas: Remove fine aerosols and low surface tension liquids lube oils from the compressor outlet to protect downstream equipment.
  • Flow Meters & Meter Runs: Remove liquids and solid contaminants to protect high efficiency meters for accurate custody transfer.
  • Gas Re-Injection: Prevent plugging in the down-hole formation by removing liquid hydrocarbons, glycol and solid contaminants.
  • HC Condensate Separation: Remove water and solid contaminants from condensate.
  • Injection Water: Remove solid contaminants and microorganisms which can foul injection wells.
  • Inlet Separation: Bulk solids and liquids removal as pre-treatment for downstream equipment.
